Liz Lemon Swindle

Humanizing
Images of Faith

[artist’s picture] While Liz’s reputation as a fine artist began as a wildlife painter, it did not become fully realized until she began to paint inspired by her faith. Lemon Swindle’s artistic signature was established by her humanizing depiction of Joseph Smith in the illustrated book Joseph Smith: Impressions of a Prophet, which garnered both celebration and controversy for her down-to-earth portraits. (There are now more than 50,000 copies of the best-selling volume in print.)

Be It Unto Me, Lemon Swindle’s first Greenwich Workshop release represents the beginning of the artist’s latest project: a body of up to 50 paintings portraying the life of Jesus Christ. As with Joseph Smith, Lemon Swindle’s goal is to humanize Christ in situations that make him more “approachable.”

A mother of five and a lifelong Utah resident, Lemon Swindle attended Utah State University, then worked for the local Osmond Studios television production company before studying with renowned wildlife artist Nancy Glazier. Although her work received favorable notice, Lemon Swindle knew that her faith was stronger than her interest in the animal world.

Instead of submitting a wildlife image to the national Art for the Parks competition, she presented a portrait of children instead. It won the coveted Founder’s Favorite award, helping her realize that her artistic and spiritual goals could be the same. A book of Lemon Swindle’s paintings, She Shall Bring Forth a Son, was published in 1998. Her artworks of faith are also in private collections, including that of Marie Osmond.

“I paint the Savior out of love and gratitude. It is impossible to balance the scales between blessings given and gratitude expressed, but for me there is something wonderful in the attempt. I consider it an honor and my feeble attempt of gratitude is to be able to put inspirational moments of Christ’s life in artistic form to better the lives of others.”
