Pomm

A Perfect Moment

[artist’s picture] “Is that your real name?” people always ask the artist. “Yes,” she explains. “Pomme” is the French word for “apple.” Pomm’s Paris-born mother discovered a character by that name in a book by Colette. Delighted, she removed the final “e” for the English pronunciation’s sake and bestowed the name on her daughter, who took it to heart and art. Raised by her French grandmother as well, Pomm had a truly bi-cultural upbringing, which soon saw her moving to France and studying art in Aix-en-Provence. Pomm loved the European, Old World architecture and feeling, particularly in the southern regions of France, where the sun and flowers inspired her.

There’s something of the best Seine River artistry in her work, recalling the painters whose images so captivated pedestrians along that romantic Paris waterway. Her views of quaint house fronts dappled in light and leaves recall similar details in famous paintings of rustic French bakeries and bistros.

It wasn’t until she returned to the U.S., however, that she definitely decided to be an artist, discovering that a watercolor layering technique taught to her by National Watercolor Society award-winner Scott Moore allowed her to paint the strong colors, light, and shadows she saw in Europe. Making this technique her own, using only translucent watercolors, Pomm’s subsequent work gained attention in Japan, Europe, and Canada as well as America. Famous collectors of her work include Kirstie Alley, David Hasselhof, and Priscilla Presley.

Pomm is a member of the National Watercolor Society as well as a Signature Member of Watercolor West.

“Sunlight warming your shoulders. A slight, gentle breeze blows through your hair. If you try, you can catch a smell of salt air. Or maybe a lingering scent of new blooms in the spring. I allow you to step out of today and take a moment for yourself.”
