William S. Philips

Flying Home

[artist’s picture] In the 1980’s, Bill’s historical aviation paintings helped Greenwich pioneer a new category in limited edition print collecting. More recently, he has very successfully evolved beyond his first artistic love, aviation, to paint what he cherishes most about life: his Christian faith, home, and family.

The same strengths that give Phillips an edge in the aviation market -- his landscapes, his reverence for time and place, and the human-interest stories behind the events -- have been capturing a ground swell of followers for his nostalgic works of art. In his new view of scenic landscapes, small towns, stately homes and heartfelt emotions, Phillips shows why all those air heroes were flying: to preserve the precious values that make life worth living and freedom worth fighting for.

Phillips is one of only a few artists to be honored with a one-man show at The Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. For his work as a combat artist, he was awarded the Navy’s Meritorious Public Service Award and the Air Force Sergeants’ Association’s Americanism Medal.

Three of his paintings were chosen as part of the National Park Service’s annual Art for the Parks, with one work receiving the “Art History Award” from The National Park Foundation. His book, The Art of William S. Phillips: The Glory of Flight, remains one of the industry’s top sellers, as he now explores glories both in the sky and on the ground.

“Aviation was my first artistic love, but my true, enduring love remains my faith, home, and family. So it is my pleasure to combine it all in my work. The historical aviation subjects, I research...the contemporary and nostalgic subjects I live.”
