Paul Landry

Halcyon Days

[artist’s picture] Here is the world of widow’s walks and white picket fences; schooners and sloops; book straps and sailor suits; carousels and striped awnings; quaint, inviting verandahs; and window boxes bursting with blossoms. Landry’s paintings have a loyal audience because, at heart, they celebrate the simple pleasures. His romantic imagery -- which is light and airy and filled with colors tht can brighten any room -- pictures a not-too-distant past -- familiar enough to recognize, yet just distant enough to become a part of our collective memroy and imagination.

His own history is suitably romantic. Born in a seaside village in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Landry was the grandson of two sea captains. His ancestry soon saw him working with fishermen when he wasn’t capturing them on film or on paper with his camera and sketchpad. He worked his way through the Nova Scotia School of Art and attended the Arts Student League in New York City before taking a sabbatical to paint the sea and all who worked with it.

Landry finally settled near the shore in Connecticut, where he taught at the Famous Artist’s School, wrote the popular textbook On Drawing and Painting and was able to concentrate on painting his favorite subjects full-time as his reputation grew.

He still lives near the shore; gardening, painting, and maintaining his interest in such sports as car racing and golf. His second book, The Captain’s Garden: A Reflective Journey Home Through the Art of Paul Landry, was published to unanimous appreciation in 1996.

“The sea, the villages that border it, the people who work it, and the flowers that bloom among them all hold a great fascination for me. The quality of everchanging stability makes them unending sources of inspiration as they beckon my heart and hand.”
